1. Fake photo in Keyhan makes Ahmadinejad’s audience appear larger The Ultra Conservative newspaper “Keyhan”, affiliated with Iran’s Supreme Leader, published a retouched image of Ahmadinejad’s speech in Tabriz last Thursday (on the left), in order to make a false impression as if the square before him was full of people. In practice, Ahmadinejad’s audience was much smaller, as evident from pictures published iranrealpicturby other news agencies, including Mehr (on the right). While Keyhan suggested that the stormy weather in Tabriz on Thursday did not discourage people from coming to hear their president, in practice people preferred to stay at home.

2. “Iran”: Intelligence Ministry reopens old files against Rafsanjani’s son – “Iran” newspaper reported that old files on Rafsanjani’s family were being reopened. According to “Iran”, these files had been first opened during Ali Fallahian’s term as Intelligence Minister, when Hassan Taeb, one of the ministry’s executives at the time, launched an investigative procedure against one of Rafsanjani’s children (probably his fourth son, Mahdi Hashemi). Foreign Ministry’s spokesman deplores Israel’s “settlement expansion” in Gilo, urges OIC to take action and quotes Obama’s dismay over the issue The newly appointed Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast, said the Israeli decision to build more houses in East Jerusalem (Note of JSSNews: Gilo in in West Jerusalem) was a “modern form of occupation” which signaled Israel’s “reckless disregard” for international calls demanding a halt to settlement activities. He urged the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to take action on the issue, adding that such a move was “unforgivable” in the eyes of Muslims and was viewed as an attempt “to Judaize Al-Quds”. In an unusual step, Fars news Agency quoted the US President, Barack Obama, who expressed dismay over Israel’s settlement expansion activities.

4. Russian Energy Minister to Iranian ambassador: “Russia did not abandon its cooperation with Iran; the delay in operating the Bushehr reactor  – a technical issue” – Talking on the phone with the Iranian ambassador to Russia, Reza Sejadi, the Russian Minister of Energy, Sergei Shmatko, reaffirmed Russia’s obligation to continue its cooperation with Iran. The Russian minister reiterated the claim that the delay in operating the nuclear power plant in Bushehr was merely a technical issue.

5. Student activists from Alame Tabatabei University arrested – Ali Reza Mousavi, Amid Mir Taheri, Ali Reza Zargar, Hamid Qahvechuan, Amir Kazemour and Yaser Masoumi – student activists from Alame Tabatabei University – were arrested while sitting together in a café. It is still unclear who is responsible for their arrest and where they are kept.

Political prisoners go on hunger strike – Political prisoners, held in ward no. 350 of Evin prison, most of whom are post-election detainees, went on hunger strike Friday to protest against the unbearable conditions in which they are held, and in demand to be moved to the general ward. Ward no. 350 has been recently reopened to receive post-election detainees and other political prisoners, and isolate them from the outer world. The conditions in this ward are known to be especially harsh. At the same time, prison authorities cancelled all visitations scheduled for political prisoners held in ward no. 209, the “security ward”, from this week onwards.

7. Human rights activist sentenced to 3 years in prison – Saeid Habibi, a human rights activist who had been arrested during post-election events, was sentenced to three years in prison for propagating against the regime and taking part in an illegal demonstration with the intention of compromising national security.

Tension and unofficial martial law in Kurdistan Province following the execution of a Kurdish political activist – The execution of Ehsan Fatahyan, a Kurdish political activist, brought about intense tension in Kurdistan Province and particularly in the city of Sanandaj. There are reports about many clashes between citizens and the regime’s forces. Last reports talk about hundreds of armored vehicles making their way to Sanandaj since Friday, and a state of high alert declared among security forces in the province. Sanandaj is in fact under unofficial martial law.

9. Iran tightens its measures against human rights activist and Nobel laureate Shirin Abadi – According to reports, the Iranian regime increased the pressure on Shirin Abadi and her family members. Shirin Abadi, a human rights lawyer who won the Nobel Prize, had to cope with hard measures taken against her and her family members by the Iranian authorities, such as freezing all her assets in Iranian banks, including the prize money, and banning her companion from leaving Iran. Talking in a radio interview, Abadi said that these measures will not prevent her from continuing her activities for promoting the rights of the Iranian citizens.

10. A delegation headed by Iran’s Cooperative Minister visits Switzerland to take part in an international conference – An Iranian delegation headed by Mohammad Abbasi, Minister for Cooperative Issues, went to Geneva to participate in the annual convention of the International Cooperative Association (ICA). The secretary of Iran’s Cooperative Bureau said that taking part in such big international conferences enabled Iran to work for upgrading its international relations, even in case of aggravations of the sanctions against it.
